Hitting the sack early, spending an uneventful night in the nondescript, small riverside village Hat Sa and taking a local sawngthaew (a converted pick-up truck into which the driver stuffs as many passengers onto two facing benches in the back as he possibly can and fills the gaps in-between them with Beer Lao crates, rice bags and fuel cans) the next morning from Hat Sa to Phongsali (c. 20 km, 1 hour, LAK 10,000.- or US$ 1.20 per person), enjoying both the rugged and mountainous scenery as well as fleeting snapshots of Akha life: (i) women displaying glittering headdresses covered with rows of silver baubles and coins and betel-stained smiles, (ii) men shouldering a firearm of some sort, long-barrelled home-made muzzle-loading rifles and the occasional M1 carbine, and (iii) gaggles of gaping kids clad in a layer of ochre-coloured dust.
