Saying our goodbyes to the Red Sea, running downwind through its narrow exit, the infamous Bab el-Mandeb, meaning Gate of Sorrows, butterflying with 10 knots over ground before a 35-knot strong true wind, carried and pushed by a powerful southeast setting sea current as if we were sailing on a conveyor belt of following seas, and noticing, much to our surprise, the unexpected and big difference of 18 degrees centigrade between the water temperatures in the southern Red Sea and in the western Gulf of Aden: 37°C vs. 19°C within just a few nautical miles - wow!

Entering for the first time the Gulf of Aden, a gulf located in the Arabian Sea between Yemen, on the south coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and Somalia in the Horn of Africa, one of the playgrounds of the Somali pirates and known by the nickname Pirate Alley due to the large amount of pirate activity in the area, meeting heavy shipping traffic, thick sea fog and dark skies, but luckily no pirates at all.

"We have them just where they want us..."

Anchoring off the African coast, enjoying the loneliness and tranquility of this open roadstead, our last anchorage in the Red Sea, and gearing up for the upcoming ride through the infamous Bab el-Mandeb, meaning Gate of Sorrows.

Setting up a reliable three-on/three-off watch system which would allow us to effectively operate our SY "Kamu II" 24 hours a day for the duration of longer sea passages in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea:
  • Dog Watch (Matt): 06:00 - 21:00,
  • First Watch (Konni): 21:00 - 00:00,
  • Middle Watch (Matt): 00:00 - 03:00,
  • Morning Watch (Konni): 03:00 - 06:00,
  • Forenoon Watch (Matt): 06:00 - 09:00.
