Strolling through Song's daily wet market aka pasar teresang, a chatty, noisy hive of grass-roots commerce, which opens before dawn, and meeting friendly Iban hawkers and pedlars from the nearby longhouses who sell in their colourful stalls anything and everything from Borneo's jungle: from edible delicacies like civet cat, wild boar, deer, frog, snail, jungle fern and durians to rattan baskets, beadwork, charm bracelets, leather belts and thongs.
Taking the regular Khai Kiong express boat (MYR 10.- or US$ 2.80 per person; Konni in 2nd class and Matt on the roof) on the murky Batang Rajang about 45 km further upriver to the bustling trading and transport centre of Kapit, the maintown in the hinterland which dates back to the times of the White Rajahs.
