Exploring the old coral-stone Catholic churches, cheap fresh-produce markets and busy pawn shops in the island's main settlements, the laid-back capital of Siquijor Town and the lively port-town of Larena, and realising that cash money is a rare and expensive commodity on the island (...there is only one international ATM, situated in Larena, which charges for the cash withdrawal of PHP 10,000.- or US$ 225.- the additional amount of PHP 200.- or US$ 4.51 per withdrawal, plus the bank’s debit commission for international ATMs of US$ 9.67, plus a processing fee of 1.5 % or US$ 3.45, plus the tricycle's return fare of PHP 74.- or US$ 1.67 from the resort to Larena and back - altogether a whopping tithe).

Meeting hard-working local fishermen and their friendly families who make a living on the island's fringing reef by harvesting the spiny and hard-shelled sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) aka salawaki (sales price: PHP 30.- or US$ 0.70 per recycled 350-ml rum bottle) and having a yummy meal of fresh live but faceless (!) sea-urchin roe served with boiled sweet potatoes and calamansi, washed down with ice-cold Beer Na Beer (5.0 % alc./vol.) for PHP 50.- per 1-litre-bottle or luke-warm Tanduay Dark Rum (40.0 % alc./vol.) for PHP 82.- or US$ 1.90 per 750-ml bottle.

Nachdem wir uns auf der Insel Siquijor die Baeuche mit leckerem und proteinhaltigem Seeigel-Kaviar vollgeschlagen hatten sind uns spaeter, beim entspannten Verdauungsschwingen in den Haengematten, doch einige Zweifel gekommen, ob wir als Veganer (Konni) bzw. Vegetarier (Matt) hier nicht gegen unsere eigenen Ueberzeugungen und Werte verstossen haben. Aber wo will frau/man da schon eine genaue moralische und kulinarische Grenze ziehen? Ganz sicher besteht unsere Ernaehrung vor allem aus Reis, Tofu, Gemuese, Obst und aus Matt’s Bier und ganz gewiss essen wir keine gekochten, gebratenen und gegrillten Schweine-, Affen- oder Menschenbabies; aber es gibt doch auch interessante Grautoene, beispielsweise beim Seeigel-Kaviar und manchen anderen Meeresfruechten.
Wir grenzen uns dort ab, wo Nahrung einmal ein Gesicht mit zwei Augen hatte. Gesichter haben uns ein ganzes Leben lang fasziniert und beschaeftigt, so dass wir “Lebewesen mit einem Gesicht” lieber doch nicht verspeisen moechten. Unsere Variante von saving face.

Als Veganer bzw. Vegetarier werden wir auch recht haeufig von den menschlichen Fleischfressern nach unseren Beweggruenden gefragt. Meistens bloss deshalb, damit sie ihre eigene Fleischfresserei vor sich selbst und vor uns besser rechtfertigen koennen. Dabei werden von ihnen eher langweilige psychologische Abwehrmechanismen benutzt (z.B. peinliche Bagatellisierungen, obergescheite Rationalisierungen, aggressive Umkehrungen), und es wird schnell deutlich, dass die Fleischfresser es den Vegetariern genauso schwer verzeihen koennen, keine Tiere zu essen, wie manche Deutsche immer noch grosse Schwierigkeiten haben, den Juden Auschwitz zu verzeihen…

(iii) Wir moechten ausserdem, dass auch Ihr Enkelkinder in einer lebenswerten Umwelt noch mindestens 100 Jahre lang froehlich leben koennt und hoffen, dass es sich die vielen verfetteten Fleischfresser auf diesem Planeten endlich konkret verdeutlichen, welche gewaltigen Umweltbelastungen durch ihren regelmaessigen Gang zur Fleischtheke entstehen.
