2005 Map

Exploring the hidden rooms, tunnels, overgrown gardens, steep staircases and paths of the ruins of St. Hilarion Castle, inspiration for Walt Disney's fairytale castle, and biking back along the Kyrenia Mountain Range via the beautiful village of Lapta to Girne.

Consuming Turkish coffee with cardamom under the Tree of Idleness in Bellapais village, home of author Lawrence Durrell, and watching a brilliant performance of Mozart's "Magic Flute" in the ruins of the impressive but quite incongruous-looking Augustinian Monastery.

Visiting the walled (Venetian) city of Famagusta by local dolmus (minibus) and admiring the Gothic architecture of the imposing Lala Mustafa Pasa mosque which dominates the skyline of the Old Town.

Touring the tourific Troodos Mountains in a hired Suzuki Grand Vitara 4x4 compact SUV for 35.- per day and visiting the UNESCO-protected frescoed churches and monasteries, especially the Kykkos Monastery, a spectacular religious site with a splendid Byzantine museum, where we spent one night, free of charge, in the pilgrims' quarters.
