Relaxing in our comfortable lodge and watching the rain pouring down over the rain forest, reading in Alfred Russel Wallace 1854 CE diary how he “… was much annoyed by the leeches for which this district is famous ... these little creatures infest the leaves and herbage by the side of the paths, and when a passenger comes along they stretch themselves out at full length, and if they touch any part of his dress or body, quit their leaf and adhere to it ... they then creep on to his feet, legs, or other part of his body and suck their fill, the first puncture being rarely felt during the excitement of walking …”, later on, hiking the leech-infested forest trails of the Lambir Hills National Park in the vicinity of the 25-m high Latak waterfall and having our first serious encounter with those ground-dwelling, bloodsucking common brown leeches (Haemadipsa sylvestris) which successfully curled and significantly fattened as they filled with our blood (they solely feed off decomposing bodies and open wounds of amphibians, reptiles, waterfowl, fish, and mammals, including, but not limited to, humans).
Taking the reliable Biaramas Express bus +60086314999 from the park's headquarters to Miri's long-distance bus terminal (MYR 10.- or US$ 2.80 per person for the 30-km trip).
