Penetrating deep Kadazan-Dusun country and exploring the sleepy country town of Kota Belud, which regularly wakes up on its Sunday open market aka tamu, undoubtedly the most exciting market and country fair in the Land Below the Wind, where a fascinating mix of Bajau and Iranun people as well as Chinese traders had joined the native Kadazan people, watching local pirates-turned-fishermen at nearby Kampung Kuala Abai unload and distribute their fresh catch from the South China Sea among their fellow villagers and enjoying thereafter an exotic-fruit picnic, with sweet mangos, aromatic jungle bananas and juicy belunu fruit, right on the pristine beach of the Usukan Bay.
Hitting the road again, on a wonderful ride, cruising down the A1, side by side with our close friends Christina & Liau, past wide headlands, sandy beaches, rice paddies and "...stretches of Sabah that are criminally overlooked by most tourists..." (according to this lovely planet's Lonely Planet guidebook on Borneo), rambling through the most northerly part of Borneo towards Kudat, thus having the Chinese warmongers of the South China Sea on our port side and the Philippine pirates of the Sulu Sea on the starboard side of our rented 4x4 Mazda Fighter TD Twin-Cab, and singing, humming and whistling our favourite road-trip songs, almost like a barbershop quartet.
